The Therapy Session

What to expect during your treatment session

Please avoid all alcohol and eat only a light meal a couple of hours prior to your treatment.

Do make sure you have showered or bathed to ensure good personal hygiene. Clean skin also helps with the absorption of the massage oil, enhancing the effects.  Exfoliating with a salt scrub beforehand is even better!

Try to arrive at least 10 minutes before your treatment to allow plenty of time to change and relax for your session.

Please allow for at least an extra 15 minutes for your initial session as you will be given a free consultation which will involve taking details of medical history and any current complaints. Subsequent treatments will require only catch-up consultation in order to update any details that may have changed.

You will then be asked to disrobe to your underwear and climb under the towel whilst I wait outside the room. If you don't want to remove all your clothing please wear something loose and comfortable that will allow me to access the areas that need working on.

Payment can be made by cash, cheque, bank transfer or card.

What happens after a massage treatment?

Illnesses and diseases that have been suppressed with medication or held emotions may surface during treatment. A contra-action is a normal reaction to the treatment especially if the receiver has never had a treatment before or if the body is very stressed.

This 'healing crisis' means a positive result of the treatment as massage makes all body systems to function more efficiently, speeding up waste removal and the elimination of toxins as well as getting rid of negative deep-held emotions.

Typical contra-actions may include:

  • Tiredness due to release of toxins encouraged by the treatment and the initiation of healing energies, which require the body to rest.

  • Muscular ache and/or headaches the nerve fibers responding to the deep work undertaken.

  • Heightened emotional state due to the positive release of deep-held feelings and emotions.

  • Frequent urination due to stimulation of the lymphatic system.

  • Changed sleep patterns you can fall asleep during the treatment, your body-clock may change.

  • Active bowels all body systems, including the digestive one, will work better.

  • Spots may occur, released toxins and hormones may surface through the skin, especially if you previously suppressed your skin condition.

How often should I have a massage?

Everybody is different so this is a hard question to answer. In general however, if you have come for massage because you are experiencing pain and restricted movement then in my experience I have found it may take up to 4 sessions to make a difference, especially if you have had the problem for a long time.  Please don't expect miracles in 1 half hour session.  If you are just experiencing some stiffness and general tightness in the muscles, it may be that only 1 or 2 massage treatments are required.

Many of my clients  like to come for an 'MOT' on a  weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis to keep on top of their aches and pains, some people will only come for a massage once every 6 months, this decision is up to you and how you are feeling. You will never be encouraged to come for more treatments than required.  If I don't feel massage is the right treatment for you, I will tell you and refer you on to other health practitioners such as a physio, chiropractor or maybe even some acupuncture.

After Care Advice

  1. Drink plenty of water - to help flush out the toxins that just have been released from the tissues.

  2. Avoid alcohol or any other stimulants (and that includes drugs, tea, coffee) for at least 12hrs after the treatment as they will de-hydrate you.

  3. Rest - to allow the body to heal and settle.

  4. Only eat a light meal (preferably healthy one!).
